Set out the morning of Jun 4th with my wife and oldest son to do some herping for horned lizards near my parents home.
Out of the 10 years or so I spent here I had only found one horny toad. I have though found numerous sage brush lizards, gopher snakes, racers, and garter snakes and have recently found plenty of rattlers. On the rare side I had found milk snakes.
I had called a friend (Keegan Bench) having remembered him tell me he had found some horned lizards near my parents, after getting directions we were off.
When we got to the location my wife Nadia, being 9 months pregnant, was hesitant to walk down the steep dirt path, but T-Roy being a mommy's boy wanted her to come. For the first half hour we had no luck as to even a sage brush lizard, so Nadia headed back to the Jeep to take a much deserved rest.
T-Roy and I headed down another dirt road, after a mile later and only one sage brush lizard we decided to call it quits and head back. As we came around a small bend i saw a 3 1/2 foot gopher snake laying across the road , after pointing it out to my son and him showing interest in it as long as I said it was okay went to go get the snake, i made sure it wasn't going to bite since on rare occasions they might I let him capture his first snake. He was so proud of himself as was I. He toted that snake all the way back to mom.
A little further down the road on a steep embankment we found our first horned lizard only about 2 1/2 inch long, and soon found two more. It was quite the trip. In fact T-Roy and I headed back three days later to find 7 more. He helped catch them as well, took some videos of him helping me it was great to spend time with my son.
